For individuals seeking a fast-track into the nursing profession, a one-year practical nursing program that provides both the academic background and clinical experience necessary for a career as a Licensed Practical Nurse is offered by the York County School of Technology (YCST). A 105-hour nursing assistant program is also available. Both YCST programs are accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). A bachelor of science degree program with a major in nursing is available through the NLNAC-accredited Department of Nursing at York College of Pennsylvania. Special programs are available for registered nurses and licensed practical nurses, as well as masters degree programs for Adult Clinical Nurse Specialist or a Nursing Education Specialist. A bachelor's degree level nursing program designed for Registered Nurses with either an associate degree or a diploma from a nursing school is available at Penn State - Harrisburg in nearby Middletown, a Pennsylvania State University campus. This NLNAC-accredited nursing major program prepares registered nurses as professional practitioners in areas of health promotion and maintenance, illness care, and rehabilitation. To meet the pre-professional needs of those interested in admission to nursing schools, bachelors degrees in science as well as a two-year pre-professional program (the first two years of the science major) are available through the College of Health and Human Development at Penn State - York.
By 2010 the shortage of RNs in statewide will likely be as large as 16,000, with shortages of LPNs as large as 4,100, according to a 2004 report from the Pennsylvania Workforce Investment Board.
