If you're looking for a well-rounded theater education, look no farther than York College which offers a theater major with an emphasis on the study of dramatic literature, as well as performance and production. Millersville University's theater department provides academic study as well as regular productions and a huge costume shop. Other areas schools offering majors in performing arts include Villa Julie College and Gettysburg College which puts on three major productions a year as well as a number of lab theater shows.
While York is a great place to get performing arts experience, it may not be the best place to find full-time employment upon graduation. Only 10 new jobs in the performing arts are expected to be added between 2002 and 2012, bring the total of fulltime performing arts employees in the York area to 80. If you like the area, however, several large cities full of performing arts venues – and most likely more performing arts jobs – are within an hour's drive away.
