York Photography Schools & Programs

If you're looking for a photography education, York offers several great schools with art programs. For example, York College's fine arts department offers a photography minor with classes in subjects such as digital photography and filmmaking and Dickinson College and Elizabethtown College offer photography and digital imaging courses in their art programs. For more intensive study, Albright College's art department teaches a five-course photography program.

With the many small businesses that employ photojournalists and professional photographers in the York area, jobs opportunities are expected to grow. Between 2002 and 2012, jobs in the arts should increase 23.1%, with 51 new jobs added each year. However, this includes everything from painting to dancing for a living, so the numbers for photography are smaller. On the other hand, in nearby Baltimore 200 full-time job openings are anticipated every year through a combination of new positions and openings in existing positions through 2012.

Why York is a Great Place to Study Photography
Perhaps better known as the rural backdrop in several hit movies, this fast-growing area of southeastern Pennsylvania is a great place to start a career in photography. York County is home to more than 70 small towns and a number of small to medium-sized newspapers—excellent opportunities for your first job as a professional photographer. Several towns also have active camera clubs, some which have been around for decades, which can link you up with other photographers. These clubs have regular meetings and photography competitions that can keep your skills sharp and round out your resume. When you're ready to move on to larger markets, big cities such as Baltimore and Philadelphia are less than 100 miles away.
